FunDayMental Friday - Illegal Potatoes

I've been entering the Mentos contest and while researching answers to the questions, I've learned some funny facts. One in particular stood out to me. Did you know that potatoes were illegal in France between 1748 and 1772? SAY WHAT!?

As a potato fan, I was shocked and appalled. No fries, no perogies, no baked potatoes, no poutine...I better stop before I cry. This fact has lead me to other questions though. If other countries ate potatoes before France knew they were safe, why the heck are fries French? According to the article I read, shouldn't French Fries actually be Spanish Fries?
